Uma Ramanan’s nasal voice goes well with rendering the kids’ version. The girl continues their song as they struggle and joins them in the fun. But since we also have the deity, the song is in sync with the situation and evokes the spine tingling associated with such deities linked in their own fine way with village life aside from us ‘getting’ the fun here. But we have kids here sharing their juvenile game in the temple and the by-lanes. The latter song shares the feel with this song, in that it evokes a deity and runs high on passion. He has used the raga before in Madura Mari Kozhundu Vaasam in ‘Enga Ooru Paattukaaran’ and Maariyamma in ‘Karagattakaran’ vis a vis folk songs. It is slow in rhythm but eminently dance-able. A Nadhaswaram with the thavil almost sounds anthemic. So we have the heroine going back in her dreams to her adolescence where she, I’m guessing from a downtrodden family, wishes to play with the guys and they refuse to entertain her and break into a song invoking Sudalai Madan. Sudalai Maadan is a deity of the villages and is often depicted with a sword soaked in blood in the icons (pardon this rather elementary depiction) and has quite a legend behind him. There is one more massive number worth discussing from the film, KOttaya Vittu Vettaikki Pogum Sudala Maada Saami. I shared Naan Eri Karai in the 17th post of the blog. Raaja again uses his expertise in Western Classical Music here to orchestrate folk melodies set to Carnatic ragas and the genres meet to have a talk with him. I don’t mean that in a bad way but this is in no way inferior to the best we hear today and is worth digging into. It is very different from the music we hear today. But there is something rustic about this album that hits you between the eyes and musically, it is refined and is up there. I am from Chennai and discovered this album about a year and a half back. Among such albums, I’d personally put ‘Chinna Thaayi’ as an important work. However, some more films of his from that time did penetrate the smaller towns/villages with success and have since gained a cult in the online forums and media which champions Raaja’s works. Of these, quite a few might have gone under the radar of the more popular ones he composed (Thevar Magan, Mannan and the likes), more likely put downable to the law of averages.

The song Kanna Varuvaaya Meera Ketkiral from the movie Manathil Urudhi Vendum also has traces of Patdheep.Ilayaraaja scored music for about 50 films on an average a year in 1992 and ’93. One of the famous composition by Ilaiyaraaja with Patdheep touches is the song Ponvaanam Panneer Thoovudhu from Indru Nee Naalai Naan. Gowri Manohari raga also incorporates the Hindustani raga Patdheep in many film songs. Other ingenious compositions are Solai Poovil Maalai Thendral from Vellai Roja, Sandhana Kaatre from Thanikattu Raja, Dhoorathil Naan Kanda Mugam from Nizhalgal, Thaazhampoove Kannurangu from Indru Nee Naalai Naan and Kannan Naalum from Ilamai Kolam. Janaki, also has traces of Gowri Manohari. Adhikaalai Nilave from Uruthi Mozhi, sung by Jayachandran and S. Yesudhas would have sung in their pleasantly honeyed voices. Another enchanting composition is Muthamizh Kaviye Varuga from the Superstar Rajnikanth movie Dharmathin Thalaivan. Unlike other melodious songs, this is a unique folk composition in which Ilaiyaaraja cleverly used this raga.
Maanguyile Poonguyile from the movie Karagaattakaaran also has touches of this raga. Yesudhas and Uma Ramanan, this song has Gowri Manohari flowing throughout it. A brilliant example would be Boopalam Isaikkum from Thooral Ninnu Pochu. There are many addictive numbers in this raga. Balasubrahmanyam and Vani Jayaram.Īs mentioned before, Ilaiyaraaja used Gowri Manohari meticulously in his compositions. All the sangadhis were incorporated and crooned ideally by S.P. With the raga’s name as the starting phrase, this number displayed the raga at its purest form.
The music composer used this raga effectively in an astounding semi-classical song Gowrimanohariyai Kanden from the movie Mazhalai Pattalam. Janaki, this wonderful song was composed by M.S. Another mesmerizing song in this raga is Malare Kurinji Malare from the 1975 Sivaji Ganesan starrer Dr. Even the interesting interludes display the awesomeness of this raga. Mahadevan, this divine song was rendered flawlessly by T.M. One of the oldest compositions in Gowri Manohari is the ever-popular Paattum Naane from the 1965 superhit movie Thiruvilaiyadal.
